Facts avout cells???
Cells have been the center of study since their discovery by Robert Hooke in the cork he observed under a simple microscope. Listed below are some facts about cells.
- Cells are the basic unit of life. Life is said to exist or have existed as long as a cell is observed in it.
- A group of cells is called a tissue. Tissues are cells that perform the same kind of function to increase efficiency. If you group up tissues together they become organs.
- Cells can only come from preexisting cell. This is one of the three postulates of cell theory. No cell can form from a nonliving thing. This is what debunked the long believed theory of spontaneous generation.
- Cells can be infected by bacteria, another kind of cell, or a virus, which is a nonliving genetic material-protein complex which can hijack the cells mechanism.
- Animal cells and plant cells are not the same. They have different components like plants having cell wall while only animal cells have centrioles.
- A cell can be haploid (N) or diploid (2N). All somatic or body cells are diploid; they contain complete set of chromosomes. On the other hand, gametes or sex cells are haploid; they contain half the set of chromosomes. This is necessary to avoid duplication of chromosomes when fertilization occurs.
